17 March 1900 — 3 Savile Row
Saturday. 17th [March 1900]. I found in the Library cupboard yesterday a bound book, marked “Sketches.” In which were drawings by Prout, Bonnington, Watteau of himself, Bartolozzi, Chantrey, Lawrence &c &c. It was a collection made by Mrs Austin Henry’s Aunt. I sent for old Mr Pollard to come & see them & he was in high delight at them & carried off the book to take them out & frame them for my collection. At 11 I went off to Cavendish Square saw Blanche & arranged to go down to the Mansion House to help her to sell at the Irish Industry Sale in the afternoon. Then I walked on to Park Crescent to see Maria whom I found pretty well. Then home. Had a visit from Adeline Bedford who came to hear what was done abt Madeira. I showed her paper we had printed to give to Dr Stewart & she approved. Lady Gregory came to lunch after which we went off in a cab to the Mansion House. I found the sale in full swing & stayed helping Blanche till past 5. She took me into the private tea room for the stall holders, the Lord & Lady Mayoress’ private apartments. They returned while we were there from having presented Lady Roberts with a diamond present at Waterloo station on her departure for the Cape. The Ld Mayor resplendent in robes– She with a lovely bouquet of flowers & an ADC in grand red uniform. I had a talk with his Worship as to the Madeira.
