18 March 1900 — 3 Savile Row
Sunday. 18th [March 1900]. I went to 10 o’cl service at German Chapel Royal & walked back with Eda who had gone there earlier. We got in at 11. Went up to see Monty & found him looking better & more cheery. Saw Dr Burton who was pleased with his progress. At 11.30 Eda & I went in a hansom to Waterloo Station & took 12 o’cl train for Southampton. I wanted to see the “Princess of Wales” Hospital ship. Got to Southampton Docks at 1.30. Major Morgan met me on the platform & took us into the S. Western Hotel where he is staying introduced us to his wife & gave us luncheon. Mr Loman (Mrs Morgan’s guardian & his niece) were of the party. After lunch we prepared to go to the Docks to go over the ship when a violent snow storm came on so that even to go the short way from the hotel to the ship we had to have a cab. It was bitterly cold. Major Morgan took us over the ship & explained it all. It is most wonderfully compact & comfortable & has every requisite for sickness. There are 3 or 4 wards well aired & delightful. Unfortunately the ship is undergoing repairs & preparations to start back to the Cape this week & was not in proper trim. The snow storm was so violent that we could not even stay on deck or see the saloon so after seeing all the below decks we returned to the Hotel & sat & talked to Mrs Morgan who is a very charming woman & very attractive & has a sweet face & gentle manner but looks very delicate. She is also going to the Cape in a mail steamer starting on Saturday—as she cannot go with her husband while he is on duty in the “Princess of Wales”– Mrs Morgan gave us tea & then we left Southampton by 5.50 train which brought us back to London by 8.38 & were at home by 9 P.M. Had some food & went to bed. The whole country was white with snow as we came home this evening till we got to Clapham Junction, after that we found slush & mud. Monty was looking well on my return sitting up in his upstair sitting room.
