19 March 1900 — 3 Savile Row
Monday. 19th March [1900]. There was snow on the roofs when I woke this morning but it melted away before 10 o’cl. Saw Monty’s Dr who gave a good account of him. The new manservant who came on Thursday left today to get his foot cured. I went over to the Bank of England to ask the old messenger there Shaw to recommend me some one on a job in the meanwhile. Sir Arthur Birch saw me & said he would help me to find someone. I went to see Adeline Bedford & asked her butler too if he knew of anyone. Had a talk about Madeira to Addie & how we were to let Lady Randolph Churchill know abt our Home there so that she might bring us invalids in the Maine as they are said to be going to stop at Madeira. She advised me to go & see Mrs Adair or Mme von André & I went to the latter & saw her & she promised to cable to Lady Randolph Churchill about it. Then I went home to lunch. Lady Gregory came to lunch– She leaves for Italy tomorrow with her son. At 3 after paying Monty a little visit, I walked to Devonshire Place to see Mrs Holmes White who has lost a son in the war a very fine handsome fellow. I remained an hour with her—then went home to tea. Blanche came to tea & afterwards Nela came & carried off Eda to dine at Park Crescent. Maria came to the door to enquire about Monty & took the 2 girls back. Miss Oswell came at 7 & remained to dinner. Arthur DC. called & I begged him to stay & dine wh he did. We arranged a party for the theatre this week. I will take the young people & will break down my dislike of going—who I have never got over since my sorrow began. It is the last outward sign of my grief wh I shall let go of! but I may be of use to Nela.
