16 April 1900 — Canford Manor, nr. Wimborne, Dorset
Monday. 16th April [1900]. Typed– Stuck in newspaper cuttings into the book of Henry’s doings in 1868 & 69. I found that they were still loose in the book & that I had not put them in securely as I ought to have done when I first married– But we went off so soon abroad travelling in Italy & then off to Madrid that I had had little time to do it—& now here I am doing it after 31 years. It is a melancholy task but I am glad to complete it—as it is a record of his life’s work. In the evening when we retired for the night Corrie came & sat in my room—& opened her heart to me about all her troubles. She is still so devoted to that wretched husband of hers that it is doubly hard for her to bear his brutal conduct towards her. I think she has few illusions left now as to his real character—& yet she adores him. We sat on till past 2 in the morning talking it all over.
