17 April 1900 — Canford Manor, nr. Wimborne, Dorset
Tuesday. 17th [April 1900]. Typed in the morning. After lunch I went out driving with Cornelia & we took little Jim Rodney with us. We went in the open carriage with postilion wh was very smart & rather old world. We called on Mrs Portman who had a pleasant house & grounds in Wimborne. Thence we went to Stone & found the lady who has hired the house for a short time, at home. Then we went to the house agent—as we were really looking first to see if we could find a house for my sister Maria Du Cane & her family. They wish to leave London & would like to live at Wimborne. A Mr & Mrs Treherne, Mr Ralli & Mr Arnold White arrived– Rosie & Matt Ridley arrived yesterday. While at dinner I received a long telegram from the Secretary of State for War forwarding a cable from the Cape beginning we should remove our convalescent Home from Madeira to the Cape where it is urgently required & recommending a house which is offered us rent free at a place called Matjesfontein. This must be attended to at once so I have told Cornelia that I must return to town by an early train tomorrow.
