19 April 1900 — 3 Savile Row
Thursday. 19th [April 1900]. I telegraphed to ask if Lady Gwendolin could come from Hatfield to the Com. meeting tomorrow & she said in reply “Yes”—so it is settled. Dr Lankester came & prescribed for my throat & cough. Mr Wainwright kindly called also & I told him of our plan to send on our Convalescent home to S. Africa & I consulted him about nurses, drugs &c—he promised to make enquiries & let me know. After lunch I walked to Victoria St & called on Surgeon Genl Muir, showed him our telegram & asked for advice. He told me our committee should apply to Quarter Master Genl Sir Charles Clarke at the War Office for facilities as to moving our staff & equipment & I walked home calling at Miss Oswell as I came—& on getting home I found we had crossed each other as she had been here– However she returned later—stayed & dined & helped me to prepare for tomorrow’s committee. Mr Cazenove came abt 5 to talk over the money part of our business & was joined later by Mrs C. At the same time had a visit from Mr Woods R.A. who gave me all the Venice news: that the organ gallery is finished in the church & is a success &c. My new butler Siret came this evening & assumed his duties. Knapp arrived from Canford with my luggage so I hope to get settled down comfortably again.
