21 April 1900 — 3 Savile Row
Saturday. 21st [April 1900]. Knapp went off at 9.50 with my letter to S’hampton. A girl came from Hammond typer office to see what is the matter with my machine. She carried it off to the office to have it put in order for me. Dr Bond called to hear about the Committee meeting & promised to come to the next which is on Monday at 10.45. Dr Lankester came to see after my cough. Connie came to lunch. I had arranged to go to Bethlem Hospital & just as I was starting I recd a telegram from Dr Hyslop asking me to postpone my visit so I walked up to Park Crescent to see Maria & Richard was also at home. It was quite hot today & rather fatiguing. I spent all the evening after tea pasting newspaper cuttings into Henry’s old books & just stopping for dinner only. Going then over all his early life & thinking of all his hopes, fears & joys made me very melancholy & brought my trouble freshly before me. I made me feel the vanity of all earthly cares—& long to be at an end of them– Where does it all end? His busy life & quiet perseverance & talent has passed away—no one thinks of it but I—& we shall all come to this—sooner or later—& the place thereof shall know us no more! How hard it is to realize this when one is in the vigour of life & youth.
