7 May 1900 — 3 Savile Row
Monday. 7th [May 1900]. Miss Wyld came to lunch with me. Nellie was out at her dressmaking all morng & returned to lunch. I went in the morning to see my brother Ivor to give him the Murray’s answer about printing our mother’s journals. The 15 vols would cost over £1200! of course the idea has to be relinquished. Today the naval brigade just returned from Ladysmith was brought to town & reviewed by the P. of Wales. Everyone went out to see them pass through the streets– They went to the City & were parading most of the day. I wanted to go to Bethlem Hos: in the afternoon—the hansom I was in got stuck near Covent Garden so I got out & proceeded on foot– It was difficult getting over Waterloo Bridge—but I accomplished it & at last beyond Waterloo Station I got another hansom & went on to Bethlem. I met Canon & Mrs Lyon at the gate just coming away from visiting a daughter they have been obliged to leave there. I had come on purpose to see her & told them so. Dr Hyslop took me to the ward where the poor girl was lying on a sofa. She would not speak & seemed very confused but smiled when I spoke to her of Olwen Ponsonby of whom she is fond. I had tea with Mrs Hyslop & then returned home by 5.30. Nela came to see me & sat till near dinner time. Mr Bishop came to dinner to talk abt the Venezia-Murano Co: but left early.
