9 May 1900 — 3 Savile Row
Wednesday. 9th [May 1900]. Wrote letters & typed in the morning & talked to Aimée Cariati. Mrs Kennedy wife of Robt Kennedy our Minister at Montenegro called. He had been Henry’s private secy part of the time we were at Constantinople. They are very nice people & faithfull friends. At 4 o’cl Aimée took me to the Italian Embassy to introduce me to Mme de Renzi. I found there Lady Carnarvon who was pleasant & asked me to go & see her. The Ambassadress was pleasant & kind. She is née Sonnino & I knew her brother the Minister of Finance at Rome. They are of Jewish origin & Mme de Renzis has the type well marked but is not distinguée. The daughter is plain. The (Genl) Ambassador a big stout man not very prepossessing. After we had paid our visit Aimée & I parted & she went her ways, I mine. I called on Mrs Rate & sat a little while with her before I walked home. Had a dinner party consisting of Lord & Lady Duncannon & Olwen Ponsonby, Sir Edward & Lady Poynter, Sir Arthur Otway, Mr & Mrs Alan Cole, Mr Frederic Leveson Gower, Mr Somerset Beaumont & Mr Musgrave. It was a cheery evening—we made a party of 14—with Aimée, Nellie & I. In the evening Mr & Mrs Kennedy came in for a short time & we talked over old Constantinople days Aimée, Mr Kennedy & I.
