10 May 1900 — 3 Savile Row
Thursday. 10th [May 1900]. Mr Williams came early & we had a talk about the servants to be got to send out to the Layard Home. He promised to go in search of them. I typed all the morning. Mr Kennedy came to lunch & also Connie & Nela. When they were gone I had a talk with Mr Kennedy about the proposed publication of Henry’s memoirs. He promised to read it over if I sent it to him & to give me his advice. Nela & Aimée went shopping together so I went to call on Miss Hogarth, Charles Dickens’ sister in law who now lives in Egerton Terrace. She was at home but people came in to call so I did not remain long. I returned home by 5 & had a visit from Lord & Lady Bessborough who came from a Ladies League meeting at Wimborne House where Cornelia had made a speech which pleased them much. At 6 I went to Arlington St to call on Lady Gwendolin Cecil & tell her the last news of the Layard Home. Mary Alderson came in from Wimborne House where she is staying & she & Lady Gwendolin condemned the Ladies League & all its ways tho’ Lady G. said she disapproves of the ritualists & blames those who disobey their bishops. We went to Wimborne House & found Cornelia in her room resting so I gave her a short message about a sick man & left her & came home. Aimée dined out & Nell & I were alone.
