26 May 1900 — 3 Savile Row
Saturday. 26th [May 1900]. Blanche’s Irish lace girl came & I spent the morning in giving her a lesson in making Greek lace. After lunch Blanche called for me & took me in her carriage to the great National Bazaar which was going on at the Empress Room at Kensington. Constance, Lady Rodney, the Ponsonby girls were all interested in the Bazaar & selling at different stalls. We got there just as Sir Wm & Lady White arrived to open the Bazaar. They went in procession headed by some Scotch pipers– Mrs Baden Powell mère & her daughter were also there, but we did not stay to see more—& penetrated into the great tent wh was crowded—& very hot. Luckily we got away in an hour & then went to the Albert Hall where the Arts & Crafts Exhibition was going on & where Blanche had a stall. There we stayed for a long time. There were a good many people there but the crowds was quite a contrast to that at the Bazaar—which was smart & excited—here it was quiet & dark colours prevailed. Sir G & Lady White came there & were mobbed & cheered & made much of. People are beginning to laugh at them for their allowing themselves to be shown about in public as they are doing. Old Mrs Baden Powell, mother of the hero of Mafeking is the worst in this way. She makes herself perfectly ridiculous– Illuminates her house every evening & appears on the balcony to bow to the crowds in the streets—but she is generally looked upon as rather mad. I was tired out when I got home at 7 & glad to dine alone—still in the evening I busied myself in arranging the furniture in the drawing room.
