7 July 1900 — 3 Savile Row
Saturday. 7th July [1900]. Fannie Browning turned up this morning having come from Venice to see about getting a legal separation from her husband so all I did to bring them together has turned out to be a huge failure. Mr & Mrs Strong came to luncheon & Monty lunched also with us & then showed the Strongs all his treasures & collections of old prints, medals & theatre tickets. I then walked to see Maria whom I found very shaky & I asked what was going to be done about the house at Longham Ivor has offered her & which Richard has now refused to accept. Nela has been out of town but returned while I was there so I carried her off to call on Cornelia who was home again & we 3 fully discussed the question whether Maria would benefit by the change &c &c. Finally we decided to ask a Dr what he thought so Nela & I went to 13 Dover St & saw Mr Burton. He is decidedly of opinion that she ought to go to the country & that she may live some years—altho’ she is so feeble & bent & shakes so– This reassures us & I determine to try to get the Du Canes to accept Ivor’s offer of Longham.
