17 July 1900 — 3 Savile Row
Tuesday. 17th [July 1900]. This day two years my brother Arthur died. I thought much of him poor fellow—& how all seem already to have forgotten him—his widow married again—& all his place in this earth wiped away. Cornelia had a musical party at Wimborne House but I had not the heart to go to it. I went out late for a walk when it got cool—met a man in the streets who addressed me in French but by his accent I found to be Italian. Asked his way to walk to Guildford. He may be & probably is an imposter but seeing he is a foreigner & looked respectable I told him to go by train & gave him a few shillings I happened to have in my pocket & set him on his path. If his story is a lie—the punishment will be on his own head!
