19 July 1900 — 3 Savile Row
Thursday. 19th [July 1900]. Still very hot. Miss Sharpe (Maria’s ex gov: came to lunch). She now talks exclusively of herself which has become very wearisome. Lady B. Coutts sent to ask me to go lunch with her but I could not leave my guest so I went to Stratton St directly after lunch & Lady B. C. told me she wanted some particulars of the Layard Home that she might try & interest some friends of hers in it. Lady Gwendolin Cecil came to tea & Aline Lambton– Consulted with Lady G. over the Home & decided not to give it over yet to Red Cross. Nellie & I took a walk abt 6.30 when the heat of the day was over & I went on to Cav. Sqr to see Blanche who was just dressing for dinner & I also talked to Edward who was resting & trying to get cool. I got home abt 8 & found Sir Arthur Otway already arrived to dine with me. We had a talk about the part of Henry’s Biography he is going to write—viz his parliamentary career. Louis Du Cane looked in after dinner seeing our windows open & lighted up. We sat talking till nearly 12.
