15 October 1900 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 15th [October 1900]. Lady Poynter & I both breakfast in our rooms & the young people breakfast down stairs & go their own ways. Mr Christie came & had a long talk about things to be done when the Bishop of Gibraltar is here next week &c. This morning there were alarming telegrams as to the state of the Empress Fredericks health. The Emperor of Germany has put off a journey to remain near her—& I fear that she is really dying & have a feeling I shall never see her more. I went with Nela to dine at 7 o’clock with Mr & Mrs Christie. Mr Montalba & Mrs Browning also dined there. At 9 I had to come home as I had my first evening tea party of the season– I brought Mrs Christie & Mr Montalba with me & Fanny B. followed later. I sent the gondola to fetch Iduna. By some mistake the gondoliers did not wait to take her home & she became furious—abused them roundly & it was all I could do to keep my temper & speak quietly to her. This is the result of having been treated as a spoilt child and not having been taught self control—of course all those who were standing by & heard her was much astonished.
