17 October 1900 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 17th [October 1900]. Tried over songs & guitar & mandolin music with Eda to sing this evening to the sailors at the Institute. Lady Poynter accompanied me on the piano & lured me on to sing all my old songs—that I have not even looked at for years– How long ago it seemed to me since I used to sing them—& how it took me back to happier days! I was surprised to find that I had any voice left—& I really have a good deal though rusty for want of use. We went out in gondola after lunch & went to tea with Mr & Mrs Curtis at the Pal. Barbaro. After which I took Lady Poynter for a quiet row on the Grand Canal & then home. We dined at 7.30 & afterwards went to the Sailors Institute—& entertained the sailors—of whom unfortunately there were not many– I sang a solo & a duett with Mr Walrond & we all contributed according to our talents—the sailors also singing. Got home by 11– Virginia DC. had a letter to say her mother has had a fall & is in bed. I have long been fearing one would come as she is so feeble & will try to move abt without assistance. We telegraphed to ask after her & had a satisfactory answer that she is going on well.
