23 October 1900 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 23rd [October 1900]. The Walronds went off in gondola to Torcello with Issie & Virgie Du Cane. The Bishop of Gib. went out with Mr Christie. The latter returned by 1 & directly after lunch the Bishop & Mrs Sandford left for Milan– I sent Eda over to the Palazzo Tiepoletto where the Bishop of Peterborough & Lady Mary Carr Glyn were lodging to fetch them to stay with me. Lady Mary had to remain in her room. Lady Poynter & I took a quiet row & went to the Edens garden wh is now pretty with chrysanthemums & where we found the Padroni who returned yesterday to Venice. The 3 Du Cane girls left for England by 11.40 P.M. train for Milan & are going straight through to England. They have hurried on their journey owing to their mother’s having had a fall & being in bed. Poor Maria it is terrible to feel how fast she is going down hill—tho’ not yet an old woman—verily we are all drifting towards the end & the circle of the family is drawing in. It makes me sad at heart.
