28 October 1900 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 28th [October 1900]. Went to morning service with the Bp of Peterboro’ & Lady Mary Carr Glyn & Lady Poynter. Eda played the organ– After service they went to the picture gallery & I went with Mrs Curtis to her house to talk over the state of affairs with Mr & Mrs Browning. We agreed that though Mr B: has behaved shamefully that Fanny had been more than unwise in the way she had left her home & wrong in speaking to almost strangers abt her husband– I want to help if I can but it is very difficult as both parties are now so uncompromising. I also told Mrs C. about the attitude of Horatio Brown to me of late—how rough his manner is to me & asked her to find out what is the matter & who has made mischief– If people would only be peaceable in this world! I hurried back to lunch after this talk. Lady Mary & Eda went to afternoon service at 3.30. I took the Bishop & Lady Poynter to the Eden’s garden– There were a great many people there it being often a Sunday meeting place. Came home to tea. The Bishop & I went to the Sailor’s Institute to the 7 o’clock service & so we all dined rather late.
