1 November 1900 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 1st November [1900]. Had Lady D. & Miss B. to lunch– I took Aline & Lady P. out to the Piazza afterwards & we rowed round the Fondamenta Nuove to see people going to the Cemetery. A bridge of boats had been put up this year for the 1st time & there were crowds going by it. Also boats full of people being ferried across standing close & each boat full almost to sinking. It is a curious scene & brings to one’s mind the old legends of Charon & the Styx—& Dante’s Inferno–
