4 November 1900 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 4th [November 1900]. Went to morning service at 10.30– After lunch went to the Eden’s garden for a short time & then made a giro in gondola returning to take tea with the Edens at their house. Mr & Mrs Luke Fildes, Mr Woods & Mr Brown dined with us. As we came out of the dining room a telegram was put into my hands saying “Maria much worse.” I know not what to think whether she is dead or not—my impulse is to start at once that is tomorrow. I fear that it is the end– The rest of the evening till my guests left was an effort– I got to bed rather bewildered.
