5 November 1900 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 5th November [1900]. I telegraphed this morning to ask how Maria is & towards evening got an answer “condition unchanged,” which tells me only that she is alive—& so I must be patient till I get my letters promised in yesterday’s telegram. I went out for an hour with Lady Poynter to the Piazza to help her to shop. She bought a little ring– Last time we passed the shop & asked the price the man asked 22 francs today he only asked 15—having evidently forgotten us. Also last time he had another customer in the shop & wanted to get rid of us. After lunch we went to the Edens garden Lady P. & I & there were joined by Lady Dounshire, Miss Balfour & Aline. The chrysanthemums were in their glory—the day was splendid the place looked lovely. We all went to tea with the Montalbas at 4. There was a splendid sunset visible from the windows of their house on the Zattere. In the evening usual reception—the Misses Monks, Dounshire, Mrs Curtis, Carry Eden, Fanny Browning, Mr Christie, Mr Montalba came. A splendid moonlit night.
