7 November 1900 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 7th [November 1900]. Letters this morning give no better acct of Maria– I took Lady Poynter out in gondola before lunch to give her a last look of the Piazza—& after lunch accompanied her to the station & saw her off to England by 2 P.M. train– At 3 took Aline out went to Dorigi the stone mason to look for a chimney piece of my niece Rosie Ridley’s room in London, then fetched Mr & Mrs Luke Fildes & took them to Missiaglia the jeweller to see about their getting a pearl necklace after wh Aline & I returned home to 5 o’cl tea. On our doorstep I found waiting for me Mrs Curtis, Lady Dounshire, Miss Balfour & Hilda Montalba– They paid me a long visit. Mr Christie also came– I told him I would meet him this evening at 8 oclock at the sailor’s Institute—but just after he left the house I got a telegram in answer to mine asking how Maria is “Doctor anxious restless pulse weaker,” so I could not go– It is evident that Maria is dying. I had a long debate within myself as to whether I should start off tonight. I long to go—but I feel it would be useless—& I could be of little help– I should have a fatiguing journey wh would be useless– I sent Aline out with Lady D. in gondola in the evening to enjoy the moonlight & went early to bed.
