16 November 1900 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 16th [November 1900]. This morning’s telegrams announce a terrible railway accident at Bayonne in which Admiral Canevaro’s brother the Duke di Zuagli has been killed & it is also reported the Duchess also– It is said that the Adl & Ersilia have gone off to Bayonne instead of to London! It is a terrible thing. It was a lovely day. I took Barbara Layard out in afternoon to the Piazza. The Montalbas & Christies, Mr Hulton & Iduna Bel. came to tea. Just before dinner I had a telegram from Nela Du Cane saying “Condition wonderfully improved” which is very cheering. Played Halma after dinner with Barbara.
