22 November 1900 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 22nd [November 1900]. It was a splendid day & as Barbara is leaving on Saty morning I thought I would take her out this morning to the Piazza to please her—so we went in gondola & she did some small shopping & we returned home to lunch. Went out again after lunch for a turn & left a note at the Montalba’s door—then I saw Signor Cozzi passing by—stopped him & enquired what news of the Canevaros– He says the Duke his brother is to be buried temporarily at Paris with military honors—that Canevaro then goes to London to do his mission to the Queen & will return at once to Italy to settle affairs & to take the title of Duke as he is next heir. The Dss is still alive with both arms broken; her face & chest injured & not expected to live. We went to tea with Iduna at 4 & came home at 5. Mr & Mrs Luke Fildes & Mr A. Montalba dined with us. Mrs Clay Ker Seymer arrived from England to stay with me. She is an old friend of my youth & from Dorsetshire—now is fat & looks old & wears an auburn wig to hide her grey hair which she does not like– She is a good & faithful friend—unfortunately she married a queer man who encouraged her in unconventional ways—tho’ they were devoted to each other. Mr Fildes looked through my book of copies of the pictures in the house and was very kind and complimentary about them.
