21 November 1900 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 21st [November 1900]. Today is the Empress Frederick’s birthday & I telegraphed to her my best wishes. It was difficult to know what to say to a person I know is so ill & doomed. The wind was high all night & the tide unusually high. Heard today that Mr & Mrs Eden had gone to the theatre last night & had walked home in water up to their ancles! Today was the festa della Madonna della Salute. Mr Christie came at 9 & took Barbara Layard to see the procession. They found the bridge of boats had been carried away by the wind & there was no procession. However Barbara enjoyed the sight– After lunch I took B. out in gondola to the Venezia Murano & helped her to buy some glass & also showed her Rubelli’s silk looms– The wind was high & it rained all night.
