24 November 1900 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 24th [November 1900]. Barbara Layard left by 8.45 train for Genoa & Ceylon and I am glad to find myself alone with Gertie Seymer. Mr Christie came & brought me a letter from the British & Foreign Mission to Seamen in answer to one from our Committee here sent while the Bishop of Gib. was here. I typed out a copy & wrote to the Bishop forwarding it. After lunch took Gertrude in gondola to the Piazza & to the Curtis who showed her their beautiful apartment Palazzo Barbaro– When we got home at 5 found Clara & Hilda Montalba waiting for us. Their brother joined us at tea– The letter I got from Nela Du Cane says that the Dr told them Maria is getting weaker & that the downward course is now inevitable—so it is now only a matter of time–
