25 November 1900 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 25th [November 1900]. Went alone to morning service. Afterwards went to see Fanny Browning who is not very well & then walked home. Splendid day. Sun quite hot. After lunch took Gertie for a row up the Grand Canal by the Porta Marittima & Giudecca to S. Vio & went to the afternoon service & then came home. The Belmondos came to tea & then Mlle Cozzi called bringing her friend Baroness Reinelt to call on me—a good natured little Austrian who had lately lost her husband, a financier. She is said to be the daughter of a butcher—very rich & very generous. She spoke little & then said suddenly “Quand je vois la Comtesse je crois regarder une reine”—which to my confusion I discovered to refer to me!
