10 December 1900 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 10th [December 1900]. Weather still lovely. Modelled—& did not go out as I had a bad night & was tired. Gertie went out alone. Had tea in my bedroom & rested. Received in the evening. Nearly all English those who came—except the French consul’s wife & the Austrian consul– Just at the end of the evening I observed something wrong with Gertie—& I dragged her out of the room—& got her upstairs & to bed with difficulty. I had been warned that she was given to queer ways but had hardly believed it & had never seen it before– I passed a wretched night with the shock & sorrow of it.
