9 December 1900 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 9th December [1900]. I took Iduna to morning service & I walked home accompanied by Mrs Christie as far as the Traghetto S. Benedetto. After lunch went out for a row with Gertie & to service at 3.30. Most lovely weather. After service I went to Hotel Luna to see Baroness Reinelt & had a long & sad talk with her on the death of her husband whom she adored– He died suddenly in the night. I did my best to help & soothe her & it was a comfort to her, I found, to open her heart to one who had gone through the same trial. It was a trying interview—reopening all ones wounds which are only surface healed. Came home had a cup of tea & sat talking to Gertie till time to go off to the Sailor’s Institute where there was a service at 7 P.M. The Scotch clergyman Dr Robertson addressed us but was not very eloquent. Mr & Mrs Christie walked home with me & Gertie & I dined late & went early to bed.
