8 December 1900 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 8th [December 1900]. A lovely day. I accompanied Gertie to the Palazzo Ducale, it being many years since I had gone over it & we also went down into the prisons, terrible holes, as no outside light can penetrate into them. It is too horrible to think of the cruelty of man towards his kind when he can get him into his power! It was the fête of the Immaculate Conception & the whole town was out & S. Mark’s church, into which we looked was full. Got home to luncheon at 1. I remained in the rest of the day & modelled the new wax clay Mr Fildes got me from England. Iduna called just before dinner.
