7 December 1900 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 7th [December 1900]. Quiet morning & worked at Henry’s medal—also tried some prepared paste Mr Luke Fildes has kindly got for me from England. Weather fine tho’ getting cold. Out in gondola to Piazza. Bought photographs of the Venus di Medici as a help to modelling. Mme Rubini an English lady widow of an Italian came to tea with her sister & daughter. The daughter would not speak English. I was told that the father hates English & wd not let his family speak the language– When he died he left his wife the smallest amount allowed by the Italian law—& thus left her in the power of her 3 daughters– Mr & Mrs Christie also came & Princess Adine Windischgrätz. The latter asked to see my modelling & came up to the Studio—& only left just before dinner time. Mrs Browning brought an American lady, Mrs Wheaton Smith to introduce her to me. She is a Boston lady divorced & married again & it is a question whether she is to be received—& I have decided to do so. She is tall good looking & well dressed. She is said to have divorced a bad husband having first run away from him & her children & gone to the mother of the man she afterwards married. She seems quiet & good & why not give her a helping hand.
