17 December 1900 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 17th [December 1900]. Modelled in morning– Directly after lunch Pen Browning came and brought me all his correspondence with his wife relating to their last disagreement, to read & I tried to persuade him to do what she wants about her money wh is in the Palazzo Rezzonico. He promised he would take it into consideration. He really seems to me to have some subject of complaint as to her action—however she may have to complain of his conduct towards her morally. He begged me to try & persuade her to return to her home if only for appearance sake. This I fear she will never do– Mr Christie came at 3 to show the pictures & house to an English lady & gentleman. I did not go out till after 5 tea when I accompanied Gertie to the station to see her off to Trieste where she will embark for Athens to stay with Sir Edwin & Lady Egerton. As I left her she put her arms round my neck & said “I leave you a better woman than I came, I will try to follow your example”—so I hope she may cure herself of her bad habit tho’ I rather doubt it. I fear it is of too long standing. This evening very few people came—only Fanny Browning, Mr & Mrs Wheatland Smith, Mr Williamson & Giorgio Cozzi.
