18 December 1900 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 18th [December 1900]. Wrote letters to send to England by Torfitt the butler who left for England this evening as I no longer require his services. Count & Countess Cora di Brazza & their little daughter Ida came to luncheon with me. I took the Countess afterwards in gondola & left her at the Canevaros & went on to see Fanny. Had another stormy interview with her & let her shriek herself out after which she said she would consult with her lawyer & send me exact word what she wants from her husband about the money. I left her calmer & returned home– Later I got a letter with this paper but upbraiding me for the part I am taking in not blindly taking her view of the case & forbidding me ever speaking to her on the subject as soon as this money question is once settled—so true is the adage that one should never meddle between husband & wife. However I must try to carry through to the end.
