25 December 1900 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 25th [December 1900]. Christmas Day. I went to church & called for Iduna & took her with me. After lunch I went out in gondola & left some cards– Mr & Mrs Christie dined with me at 7 & directly after dinner we went off to the Sailor’s Institute to help in the Sailor’s Entertainment. There were already a great many men there & singing had commenced. There was a fireman of the ship Muriel who had a lovely tenor voice well taught & who sang very well– I sang one plantation melody. Mr Newman’s musical sketch was performed after an excellent supper. The English Consul Mr de Zuccato & Mr Montalba came & helped. Between 60 & 70 sailors were fed. The food had all been cooked at my house by my cook Jane– She & Baker my maid were there & helped– Mr Christie handed the men cigars & they sat smoking listening to the musical sketch & singing themselves. Later on the chairs were all put back & games began such as musical chairs, blowing out a candle blindfolded– I & the Christies left about 12 but the men remained on late past 1—had coffee & cakes & we must hope they all went back to their ships sober for once on Christmas Day as by then the wine shops were shut. There was a Capt. Jenkins of the Muriel there from Cardiff who knew about my family & was very friendly. He invited my servants on board his ship & they have asked him & his nephew to their dinner here on Thursday.
