24 December 1900 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 24th [December 1900]. I went at 10.30 on foot to church where I found Mrs Christie decorating for tomorrow’s service. My 2 maids went to help & Mr Christie left them at work & went off to shop for the entertainment at the Inst. tomorrow eveng. We bought at Galvani’s on the Fondamenta Canonica plates at 10cs a piece, knives, same price, ditto forks, ditto spoons—& we provided for a supper for over 70 men for less than 60 lire! After this I went home for luncheon & started again to shop on my own account for a few Christmas presents I had to give. Had usual reception in the evening– The Le Malliers & Bompards, Belmondos & Hultons came– Mr Newman & 2 boat loads of sailors came & sang “waits” under our windows to the amusement of the french– Then we had a “snap dragon”—also a thing they had never seen–
