1 January 1901 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. [1st January 1901]. New Year’s Day. Breakfasted in my room in my dressing gown as usual at 7.30. Went to morning service at 10.30—in gondola– Walked back afterwards. Went in to St Marks church where all candles were lighted & the church full– Back for luncheon. We had a very rough night rain & ½ a gale but it cleared & the sun came out brilliantly. Did not go out again. Began to copy one of the pictures of B. Licinio for my catalogue. Long visit from Mr Guggenheim who came to wish me a happy New Year. He kindly offered to have my small medal of Henry cast for me. I had to dress early as I dined with the Edens soon after 7 & they took me to the Fenice to see Tannhauser. Cachmann sang well. It is the first time I have been to the opera since my trouble & it made me profoundly sad—but by degrees I got better & enjoyed the music– Got home just as it struck 12—& so has ended my first day of the year & I must get into bed–
