6 January 1901 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 6th [January 1901]. Went to morning service in gondola. Mr Christie being away service done by a Mr Banbury. In the middle of the service Mrs Browning fetched me up to the gallery to help in the singing as there was no one in the choir but her. Coming home I walked accompanied by Mr Montalba. We went to Guggenheim’s & I arranged with him to cast my medal of Henry & then I came home & Mr Montalba lunched with me. Tho’ very cold still the sun was delicious & we had coffee in the Belvedere when it was quite warm & one had to shade the sun from ones head. Mme Bompard called at 2 with her little girl with excuses at not having come on Thursday—my gondoliers had never delivered my letter! I went to tea at 4 with the Edens & they pressed me to go to the opera tonight with them. I told them I never went to those sort of things on Sundays but they over persuaded me & I weakly consented– I went home ill at ease & before I got home I repented & then wrote & told her I would not go. I know there is no harm in it, but I have kept to this habit all my life—& I also believe it would shock my English servants who are brought up with the same ideas– I was glad I did not go—& I sat quietly writing letters after dinner till bed time.
