7 January 1901 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 7th [January 1901]. I went off to Ellen Montalba by 10 A.M. to sit for her for my portrait which she began last year & only returned in time for 1 o’cl lunch. After lunch had a visit from Mme von Fischer (née Pringle Christie) a most trying lady whom I have been trying to avoid– Mrs Eden came while she was with me to invite me to go with them tomorrow to the Opera as the Puritani which I want to hear is to be given once more & I accepted & was the more glad I had not gone yesterday evening. We went together to see some needlework sold by a Mme Sesan for a lady at Bologna—& then parted. I went to the Piazza & so home in gondola– Arranged the rooms & looked to the warming for my evening reception. Ct & Countess Papadopoli, M. & Mme Blass, Countess Morosini, Montalbas, Dss della Grazia & daughter &c & came Countess Morosini looking very handsome but tremendously over dressed & got up– The house looked pretty & I felt that Henry wd have been pleased to think I was using it in this way. Just as I went to bed I had a telegram from Sophy Palmer saying she cannot join me at Rome for another 3 weeks wh is a bore as I am going there on Friday to prepare for her. It was very cold but I managed to keep the house warm.
