8 January 1901 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 8th [January 1901]. I went off to the Montalbas by 10 oclock & sat for my portrait till ¼ to 1 when I ran home to lunch. Clara came up to Hilda’s studio & sat talking & it occurred to me to ask her to come to Rome next week until Sophie arrives. She has never been there & is inclined to accept. After lunch I continued my copy of the picture for the Catalogue & nearly finished it. At 3 I went to Palazzo Da Mula to M. Bompard’s studio to see what he has done of studies of Venice. He has very brilliant colouring but to my taste he is very banal in his rendering. He showed me a lot of bric a brac he has collected—chiefly Persian ware—some good. I went to call on Css Canevaro & found Countess Morosini there so did not remain long & came home early—wrote letters– Went to the Fenice to the Eden’s box to hear the “Puritani”—most excellently given. Prima Da Pinkert—tenore Bonci– They sang quite beautifully. The music is charming—so simple & refreshing & full of tunes & of feeling after the complication & learning & noise of Wagner. It was a real pleasure to hear. I kept thinking how Henry would have delighted in it– Bonci sang quite wonderfully & the Pinkert who is good looking & a lady has a good figure & a voice as clear as a bell & wonderfully correct & flexible.
