9 January 1901 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 9th [January 1901]. I went off to Ellen at 10 o’cl for a last sitting for my portrait. Clara tells me she cannot come to Rome for which I am very sorry. Got home at 1. Mr Woods came to lunch with me & gave a look afterwards at the figurine I have just modelled “Looking into the future.” He suggested a few alterations as to draperys. Mr Williamson called to borrow some books on art– Iduna fetched me to go out with her in gondola so I left Mr Williamson in the library to find what he wants & went off to Countess Albrizzi’s with Iduna. It was her reception day & one met all the Venetian world there all talking loud & making a great noise. Css Albrizzi is still a wonderfully young looking woman & her figure is quite girlish. Her hair would be white but she dyes it a dark red or copper colour wh however suits her well. Her sister Bss Goirlach who has been handsome is now too entirely artificial to be admired. The daughter is nice looking and amiable. The palace is a fine one & well kept up. I deposited Iduna at her house & then came home. Countess Sormani-Moretti came to tea—very amiable—& elegant but at last growing to look really old– B. & Bss Haan came also & later Mme Noce (wife of the Adl) & Fanny Browning. Latter was quite amiable & affectionate as though she had not written me such a queer letter telling me I must never more interfere in her affairs. Ersilia Canevaro & Baroness Reinelt & Clara Montalba dined with me– The latter went away early to the concert given by Mme de Mallier at the Consulat de France & then Baroness Reinelt began to talk of all her griefs against the people of Trieste, where she used to live, since her husband’s death—how grasping everybody was & she became eloquent in the subject– She says she has left Trieste to get away from the people who were trying to sponge upon her because she is rich and also abused & worried her, including her own children by a former marriage & she said she would give all her money for a little real affection. I felt quite sorry for her as she says she is quite alone without a relation in the world. She & Ersilia left at 10.30 & I then went to Mme Le Mallier’s who now is living just over the way. I went in the gondola not dressed up & it really was not very cold. Fancy going out to a party bare headed on 9th Jany in an open boat. Mme Bompard sang charmingly—Mme Schmidt with a tremendous contralto sang & shouted—& was rather trying. There were several two piano duets which did not interest me much tho well played by Mme Guarneri & M Levadé a young French composer.
