21 January 1901 — Rome | |
Monday. 21st [January 1901]. Telegrams in the Italian papers give no hope of the Queen’s recovery. It is too terrible– My cold bad & I can scarcely speak. Wrote letters in morng. Had a visit from Monsignor Stanley who “does” the Roman priest even to taking snuff! How can a clean reasonable free born Englishman put himself into petticoats under the yoke of the Papacy—but then the Stanleys are none of them reasonable. When he left I went for a short walk & meeting the Duchess of St Albans on the Piazza di Spagna walked up & down with her & had difficulty in making her hear what I said. After leaving her I went to deposit my card at the Beau Lite Hotel on Mme de Bülow who was my companion at the Hotel d’Angleterre last time I was in Rome two winters ago & then came home early to nurse my cold. Hilda Keppel came and had tea with me & stayed a long time talking which I enjoyed but wh finished my voice off. I went to bed feverish & with headache. | |
