29 January 1901 — Rome | |
Tuesday. 29th [January 1901]. Countess Cora Brazza came to see me soon after 10 to tell me about the Anglo Italian Review & the working of it. She is sanguine as to its success. I heard from Mr Blass that it is thought little of chiefly on account of the inefficiency of the editress Fanny Salazar. Later Donna Laura came & then Mrs Story née Broadwood– At 12 I went to lunch with the Canevaros & Bss Reinelt at Hotel d’Europe. I had a long talk with Mrs Story over the Browning rows– She is friend of both’s specially of Pens though she blames him much. From the Europe I went to see Lady Louisa Legge at the Hotel d’Angleterre—& on to call on Count de Basterot 229 Corso Vict. Emanuele. Long talk over our mutual friends Lady Gregory & her son, whose neighbour he is in Ireland. Then I went home abt 4 & packed for my start tonight. At 5 Miss Broadwood came to tea & had a very long talk abt the Brownings. She is Fannie’s intimate friend & I told her all I knew & we agreed the differences could never now be made up. Then I went to dine with Mr & Mrs Curtis 20 Piazza di Spagna & at 10.15 went to the station & left for Venice. | |
