17 February 1901 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 17th [February 1901]. Revd. T. C. Thorndyke arrived from Trieste where he is chaplain to do the service & I sent to meet him at 6.30 A.M. from the Trieste Austrian Lloyd steamer as he is staying with me. He is a fine old man with white hair & moustache & a military look & he told me today that he had begun life as a soldier. I took him to church in the morning but persuaded him not to go out again as he had been very unwell last week– I walked home & left him to return home in my gondola. It was a bitter day & dull & cloudy. Sat talking to the old gentleman all the afternoon. He had tea with me at 5 & when I went to dinner he went to bed as he said he never dined or eat after tea.
