11 April 1901 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 11th [April 1901]. The Gregory’s arrived about 11 having enjoyed their trip to Dalmatia & got as far as Montenegro. They describe Cettinje as a rather small miserable village under a fine mountain. I took Augusta to the Edens garden to see the show of daffodils which however were much dashed by last night’s storm. It rose very suddenly & was very violent for a short time. Lady Radnor & her niece Miss Chaplin lunched with us & we met them again afterwards at the Eden’s garden. I dined with the Edens and they took me to the Fenice to a concert led by Martucci with his Bolognese orchestra. He is a good leader—& the playing is exquisite but they Italianize Beethoven so much that one wd hardly recognise it. The house was full & as well dressed women were in the stalls it looked much gayer than on an opera night as it is not the fashion here for ladies to go to the stalls at the opera– I gave R. Gregory a ticket for the concert & he joined me there & we returned home together.
