1 May 1901 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 1st May [1901]. Long consultation with the “Ingenirere” who take charge of the works to be done in keeping this house in repair &c and who is this summer to make 2 more servants rooms upstairs. We found also a means of making up there a small green house to keep plants in which will be a great delight both to me & to old Pasquale who does gardens with such success in the windows. I am constantly complimented on the quantity of plants I have in every window of this house wh is even known as “le casa bei fiori.– Hilda Keppel came to see me at 12 & at 1 I went to lunch with Helen Lady Radnor who has taken Casa Semeticolo of old Genl de Horsey for 2 months. Only Mr Scott Gatty was there. I went to see Felici the sculptor & got some more wax for modelling as I could not get on with my figurines for want of it. Iduna Bel. came to tea & Mrs Christie the latter with the news that her husband is going to give up the chaplaincy here for that of Geneva. I regret it immensely. He is a gentleman & a good preacher. After dinner I went to Countess Canevaro who had a pleasant little evening party. Baron Franchetti played the piano most beautifully. He played some of Chopin’s nocturnes with great taste. Countess Canevaro also sang. Had letters today asking me to write to the Bishop of Pet. to beg him to try & get Cecil Alderson made Dean of Peterboro dean Ingram being just dead. I did write & should be very glad if Cecil got the appointment.
