11 May 1901 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 11th [May 1901]. At 2 oclock Sir Edward & Mr Poynter went by train to Oderzo in pursuit of a picture by Previlah which he thought might be suitable for the National Gallery but when he returned at 11 oclock he said he did not think it was well to buy it. In the afternoon I went to tea at Countess Canevaro’s where there were a great many people of the society—also the Duke & Dss of Portland. The latter is very much admired here. She is a beautiful woman—only almost too tall. I dined this eveng at the Prefettura—a large party at which were Countess Albrizzi, her sister & daughter, the Marquis del Coretto & his wife & others. The Prefettessa a pretty amiable English woman entertained very prettily & the evening was a pleasant one– Being the only foreigner I had the place of honour & was conducted to dinner by the Prefet.
