12 May 1901 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 12th [May 1901]. I went to morning service & on coming out of church I went into the Academy to meet the Poynters & the Director of the Gallery Signor Cantalamessa whose acquaintance I wanted to make. He is a middle aged sad looking man who enjoys bad health—but is a good judge of art & has improved the Academy since he has been at the head of it. He showed us the fine picture by Palma Vecchio he has lately bought for something like 2000 lire. Splendid in colour. Sir Edward went to lunch with the Curtis & returned at 3 when we all 6 went to the Montalbas to pay them a visit & to see my portrait by Ellen of which Sir E. approved much. Thence we went to the Eden’s garden where we met many people especially the Clary-Portland party & Mr & Mrs Percy Wyndham– The day was windy & rain threatened—but it was warm– After dinner Mme Giacomelli & a cousin of hers came to talk to me about her Unione but stayed but a short time.
