23 May 1901 — 3 Savile Row
Thursday. 23rd May [1901]. The anniversary of my brother Augustus’ death 39 years ago! He was my favorite brother & it was my first great grief. How many things have happened since then. I can hardly believe myself to be the same person– I was so knocked up with what I went thro’ last night that I had to remain in bed till 12. I got up for lunch. Gertie Ker Seymer lunched with Nellie & me & also Hallam Murray who came to talk to me about the publishing of Henry’s Autobiography which Murray is to publish this autumn. At 3 I went in a cab to Onslow Gardens to see Connie. Found she had had a good night after a sleeping draught & was down stairs seeing people on business. I sat a short time with her when Princess Christian arrived to see her & I went away home. The funeral is to be Saturday at Port Eliot & Connie goes down tomorrow & will return Saty to London & go to Dropmore to stay with the Fortescues who are kind & devoted friends & have been most helpful all through this trial. I came home to tea– Louis Du Cane called & went off to Onslow Gardens as he is one of the Executors– Mrs Walrond called looking very pretty & nice. I dined at Wimborne House—family party.
