15 June 1901 — 3 Savile Row
Saturday. 15th [June 1901]. In the papers there is the announcement of the death of Miss Alice Duff Gordon. I called at 34 Hertford St & found she had died on Thursday after 2 days illness of pneumonia. She was 79 but leaves an old sister of 86. They were the first of Henry’s friends I became acquainted with after my engagement & it is another link with the past being loosened. Georgy D.G. or “the Captain” as she was called is quite a character—with her ringlets & her clear cut features– She always kept her own peculiar style of dress—was pronounced & decided in her opinions which she uttered with a curious roll of her “r’s.” She began by disliking me when I first married—merely as having married her great bachelor friend—but she softened & we grew to be very friendly. It is sad to think of her as being left quite alone. Her sister was handsome, even when first I knew her. She was slim & stately & very kindly– Merthyr & Theo came to call on us in the morning. Richard Du Cane dined with us being in town for a few days– He is well but is aged.
