29 June 1901 — 3 Savile Row
Saturday. 29th [June 1901]. I went off by 3.28 train to Ashford to spend Sunday at Swinford Old Manor with the Poet Laureate & Mrs Austin. On arriving at Ashford Station I found Mr George Leveson Gower & his wife—a tall handsome woman & we shared the Austin carriage together from there to our host’s. Found assembled there Miss Tutu Cockrane (their niece) & Mr Austin Dobson the poet & his wife. Tea was served under the big oak tree. It was hot & the grass was burnt up for want of rain. But the roses were out in profusion. Mr Dobson is a little quiet thick set dark haired man the writer of much admired vers de societé is evidently a well read man & talks very pleasantly. He is an employé at the board of trade. His wife is a woman of the severe type—very quiet & unassuming—evidently very religious & a good mother to a large family. She was very simply dressed wearing the same nice black silk dress morning & evening only changing a little white lace about the throat. She is fond of telling circumstantial stories that have no point. Miss Cockrane is a clever pretty girl rather hard in manner & trying to talk smartly. She makes a good sum for herself in making pretty combinations of bead necklaces & has lately been to Rome to learn how to make real gold jewellery–
